Siege at Wounded Knee 1973

The header to this blog says (as part of the explanation of the name of the blog) "I'm not talking about the war [on terror]. The title of this blog is an argument that an armed citizenry will keep any governing body in check better than an unarmed citizenry."

I checked with a couple people that were pretty aware of what made the national news in 1973 (about the Siege at Wounded Knee) and one told me:

"I believe it was reported as the government trying to control a bunch of terrorists."

That just gives me cold chills because I personally remember watching the news in 1993 and hearing reports that the government was "trying to control a bunch of terrorists" in Waco, Texas. (I think we all know what a sham that turned out to be)

I also remember hearing in 1992 that "an officer and a suspect in Idaho have been killed in a firefight between Federal Agents and suspected domestic terrorists".

The truth about the 1992 incident (Ruby Ridge) isn't so clear cut in favor of the government.

Witnesses have said the sharpshooter fired as Mrs. Weaver, 42, held open the cabin door, her 10-month-old baby in her arms, to let Randy Weaver, their daughter and Mr. Harris inside.
Given what I know of the track record of Federal law enforcement, it is EASY for me to give the Native Americans at Wounded Knee the benefit of the doubt.

It really doesn't matter two hoots who occupies the oval office when it comes to federal law enforcement bending the rules and abusing their power. It has happened over and over again under Democrat and Republican presidents and I don't see any reason to believe that this One will take any steps to "Change" this.

Fun Yard Signs

Do your neighbors "lean to the left"?

Do you want a more "distinctive" yard?

Does your lawn need a slightly more "patriotic" look?

Well, friend, I can solve your problems! For a mere $15.95 (less than the cost of a large pizza) you too can proudly display one of these yard signs and help spread the word about our Second Amendment rights as American citizens!

There is the ever popular "I'm the NRA and I vote" (commonly seen as a window sticker on pickup trucks and automobiles throughout the nation)

Or, if your neighbors have trouble understanding what is at stake...

Or you can tell it like it is in vibrant blue and orange...

And lastly, a lovely new addition inspired by a gaffe of presidential candidate B. Hussein Obama...

One question, will they really make my shrubbery look this good?

if you are pregnant (or squeamish) may want to hit the "mute" on this video at the 1:55 mark.

Trailer for "Innocents Betrayed"

(BTW, this is what I'm talking about when I say "The title of this blog is an argument that an armed citizenry will keep any governing body in check better than an unarmed citizenry." in the blog header. You could even amend that to read add to that "An armed man is a citizen, an unarmed man is a subject.")

Myth: Gun Control Reduces Crime

John Stossel from the video: "In fact, the National Academy of Sciences reviewed hundreds of studies and could not a document a single gun regulation that reduced violent crime or murder."

The Fundamental Rules for Safe Gun Handling

Courtesy of my friends at the NRA (that's National Rifle Association for those of you in Rio Lindo, California and I've added some of my own comments in parenthesis :-)

btw, I forgot to mention the other day that Ted Nugent is also a member of the NRA.

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.
(When I was learning to shoot this rule was expressed as "Never point your gun at anything that you do not intend to destroy.")

2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.
[During all the flap about Elian Gonzalez being seized by federal agents, a liberal showed me this photograph as evidence as Elian's mistreatment by the government. I was quite happy to point out that when you look at the picture you will notice the federal agent practicing this very important gun safety rule. And kudos to the agent for not shooting the moron that just popped a flash in his face. (but the moron did win a Pulitzer for the photo)]

3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

There is the "Big Three". Also very important are:

Know your target and what is beyond.
Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second. (If outside, just assume that your bullet will travel twice the distance that you think it could travel)
Know how to use the gun safely.
Before handling a gun, learn how it operates.(This rule is still important for us "gun vets" anytime we're moving to a new class of weapon, or if it's been a long time since you've been on that type of weapon. I have several years experience with firearms but the first time I shot a semi-automatic pistol the range instructor said "Don't hold your gun like that - blood will corrode your gun." So now I hold that pistol correctly.)
Be sure the gun is safe to operate.
Just like other tools, guns need regular maintenance to remain operable. (Any good range will have a gunsmith on staff.)
Use only the correct ammunition for your gun.
Only BBs, pellets, cartridges or shells designed for a particular gun can be fired safely in that gun. (I know some folks will only use factory ammo to be extra safe but that's a personal choice. I checked out the cost and hassle of reloading myself and decided that it is safer and more cost effective for me to buy "target ammo" from a professional reloader.)
Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate.
Guns are loud and the noise can cause hearing damage. (I was taught this rule is "ALWAYS")
Never use alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription or other drugs before or while shooting. (Pet Peeve #1 - Morons who think that its a good idea to drink beer anywhere near a firearm. If this is you, do us all a favor, just go fishing instead so you'll only be a danger to yourself)
Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons. (Pet Peeve #2 - People who assume that I store all my guns loaded. That would be silly. I mean, come on, I only have two hands :-)
Be aware that certain types of guns and many shooting activities require additional safety precautions.
Cleaning Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely.
A gun brought out of prolonged storage should also be cleaned before shooting.

Happy shooting!

Happy Birthday NRA

It's not really a "birthday" for the NRA but, according to my blogspot control panel, this is my 150th post. I wanted to pick something special for this "milestone" post (i'm so self important :-) so I chose one of the most outspoken defenders of the 2nd Amendment, and by extension, one of the most ardent defenders of the Constitution, the National Rifle Association.

The National Rifle Association has quite a presence on the internet. There is the main site here, and the not-so-flashy "home" page here. And many sites that I won't take the time to list here. Anyway, I'm making today official "Kudos to the NRA day".

Many people know that Charleton Heston (star of stage, screen and television - think Moses) was a member of the NRA but a lot of folks don't realize that, if you're a member of the NRA, this also puts in the same organization as J.C. Watts (former football star and Congressman), Tom Clancy (famous author), Charlie Daniels (of the Charlie Daniels Band), Karl Malone (basketball star), Tom Selleck (another movie and TV star - you should see Quigley Down Under), and me, among others luminaries.

Have a Happy Politically Incorrect Day ! (i wonder how much a pistol shaped cake costs?...)

Good Sabbath

cool. what a day. Saw many good friends today; there was a baby dedication, accepting new members and a bridal shower at church. Went with a friend to a gun show this afternoon - i got in for free b/c i renewed my NRA membership and got a cool hat (inside the show i saw a *sweet* little 32 cal but thats another story).

I forgot to mention that yesterday i finally got to go to the range with one of my best friends. We had a really cool time.

Tonight we had a good worship service and even had a good meeting after the service. 2007 is shaping up to be a really good year, in spite of a few downers.

News You Can Use

Here's a special deal on a book that claims that it is not only the right but that it is also the DUTY of Christians to be armed. The author is from South Africa but it is an interesting idea, nonetheless. From World Net Daily.
